Shell ADU

Arising from a partnership of Autsin Zeitz and C. Wm Ṙer, this ADU is a partial answer to Portland's housing crisis. The Institute for Sustainable Solutions approached Portland State University School of Architecture to design Detached Accessory Dwelling Units that could be mass produced and deployed in the next two years. Zeitz and I developed a 53.5 sm (576 sf) single-level house with a full bathroom, private bedroom, great-room, and storage loft. We chose the construction technique used in many portions of the world, Concrete Structural Insulated Panels. Delivered as 4'-wide EPS sheets in a steel mesh, these panels join to each-other with metal ties and concrete is applied to the exterior. The shell is self-supporting. We chose polycarbonate sheets for the other two walls to provide light, and privacy.
